We are still alive but deep down, we are no more. This can be seen by the fact that most of us live in the past. It’s sometimes wondering how being in the past is so inferior, but it would be obvious by knowing the dark side of it, which we are somehow unaware of. That unawareness is the crux of the matter which adds insult to injury. In order to weaken this irrationality, we have to go through some of the drawbacks of holding the past.

1. While being in the past, we are incapable to plan for the future:

Setting a future goal needs a transparent view of the coming scenarios which prevents many regrets. As blind movement is prone to many hurdles, so is blind planning. A person who lives in the past keeps a blurred view about the daily demands and so of the future. It’s hard for him to calculate the pros and cons of his mental orientations objectively. A head living in the past scatters his energy and is unable to get prepare for the upcoming demands.

2. The past pinches happiness:

Happiness is somewhat tied to flexibility. It comes when we perceive opportunities for alterations, but unfortunately, the past has been unalterable. That is rarely liked by the mind. When it comes to the past, the mind becomes overwhelmed because of seeing the line “can’t be changed” more than the old days. Although the line is a fact that gives a signal of reality to let go of the past and to focus on the future, but here the mind only sees impossibilities and boundaries. As a result of which we fall into depression.

3. Our relations’ circle gets smaller:

Making a relationship might take less energy, but holding the relationship surely needs surplus energy. The more is the mental capacity, the higher will be the patience level and adaptability. A person who lives in the moment keeps a cool mind with fewer reactions. He has a wider chest for sudden changes in surroundings. In contrast, the one who lives in the past possesses a little amount of mental capacity to hold friends around. Most often he directs his mental energy into the past and gives less to the present surroundings. As a result of which, he habitually repels the neighboring people. The alarming point here is, it becomes a vicious cycle. The lesser the friends, the more the head is in the past and vice versa.

4. Our physical health will suffer:

Effects on physical health range from poor appetite to vital diseases like cancer, some directly and some indirectly in the cloak of depression. Clinging to the past certainly leads to depression where dementia goes hand in hand with it. Although dementia is not a specific disease, it can affect our thinking and decision-making abilities. According to a 2013 study conducted at the University of Ohio, thinking about bad events all the time increases inflammation in the body. The resulting problems could be apathy, withdrawal, visual perception, and speech problems. Moreover, it can put one in heart disease and cancer. Next time while living in the dark ages, keeping these sicknesses in view will help us.

5. Poor efficiency will be there:

The most productive people live in the present moment. The one who wants a scheduled life will surely come out of psychological time. Most of us make routines, but rare of us follow. Studies show that better work performance is bonded with authenticity. Authenticity somehow reflects dedication and being dedicated needs following own words. The one who is in the past certainly forgets a lot and frequently goes astray from his own words. All in all, how can a person who deviates from his own designed schedule be efficient?
